Sometimes doing what's ethical can be illegal, such as stealing bread to feed your family. What is legal is not always ethical and whats ethical is not always legal.
I think that there is a difference but that the line between the two is a very blurry line that is not always as obvious or dead-set as we think. Many people have a higher or lower standard of ethics and so the line differs from person to person.

Yes, there is a difference between what is legal vs what is ethical. I think it is important to follow the laws, and when people go against them, ethics comes into question. Ethical situations become problematic when everyone doesn't agree on something. Ethics is more of a philosophy, and laws are supposed to not cause any controversy or bias.
There is a difference in what is ethical,and what is legal. Most of those issues reach a grey area with multiple interpretations from different points of view. Such as banning abortion. It may not seem ethical from a religious stand point, but it is not illegal to have done.

I definitely think there is a difference. For example the issue of abortion. It may be legal but, some feel that it is the woman's right and some think its unethical or immoral. Both sides have strong points. A persons opinion on what Right they think they should have, and a persons opinion on whats Ethical or morally right. Which is why this a such a huge debated topic. Its all opinion. So the law even though its a law may not be ethically right.

Ethics seem to be more subjective and are an abstract, flexible concept, unlike laws which are clear and defined ideas for the most part (it usually becomes fuzzy when people misinterpret the law or try to bend it to fit their needs and wants).

ReplyDeleteI think more often than not, practices which are unethical are also illegal. However just because something is "okay" to do doesn't mean it's ethical.
